Amal Mahmoud: elderly care begins with respect for humanity and dignity

Amal Mahmoud says: “Caring for an older person is not simply about providing food, medication and a safe place to live. Above all, it is about respecting someone who has lived a long life, worked hard, given much and experienced a great deal. At this stage of life, they deserve people who preserve their dignity and help them feel valued.”
Older adults have the right to be treated with respect, to have their voices heard, and to have their emotional and physical needs considered. They deserve a safe, clean environment that protects their privacy and gives them reassurance.
Amal Mahmoud adds:
“Sometimes we focus on an older person’s physical needs and forget their most important need: to feel that they are still a person with value, a voice and a place in the world.
A kind word, a smile, respect for their privacy and patience with their everyday needs may seem like small details to some, but they can mean a great deal to an older person.”
Growing older does not mean losing one’s rights, nor does it reduce a person to someone who needs care. It is a stage of life that calls for understanding, compassion and respect.
Every older adult has the right to live in safety and dignity, free from neglect or marginalisation, surrounded by people who understand that caring for them is not a burden, but a human responsibility that deserves appreciation.
An older person does not only need someone to care for them. They need someone who respects their humanity.
